From the same story as previous.
Made these characters up way afterwards, so I like them a lot better. They just seem rounder and more dynamic to me.

The one on the left is Maya a girl. Duh. The one of the right is Dr. Valens, a sleazy doctor who's unconcerned about anything unless it's directly related to Maya.

BAD STORY ALERT

I guess I'll go into their back stories first.
Uh...
Maya is a normal girl, she's about 11 or so. Actually, she's not really normal. But she's your typical mopey angsty girl.

Dr. Valens is related to Maya, although they're so distant that they're not even related by blood anymore. Technically, Maya is a few generations older than Valens, so she's his aunt several times removed or something.

They both come from those huge rich families who meet their fourth cousin twice removed in huge family dinners and things like that.
Anyway, Valens has had a pretty cushy life. He acts easy-going, and it's not like he isn't smart, but he just doesn't give a shit. He entered a famous university to study medicine just because of his family's assets.
Anyway, during one of those family outings (I think this is when Maya was 7 or so), one of his distant relatives showed him a photo of Maya during her birthday, and was gushing over the "cute little girl." Valens was humoring the relatives with his sleazy grin, as he always does. But when he saw the picture, he noticed that Maya wasn't smiling in her birthday photo. It wasn't too unusual for that to happen, but when he looked at her other photos, she wasn't smiling in any of them.
He asked to look at her photo album. And she never smiled in any one of her pictures.
Anyway, this is pretty typical a character epiphany. Valens has never really felt happy either, but he covers his discontent with his easygoing demeanor. He felt that he should really help this girl before while there's still room for help, so he sought her out.

To Maya, Valens is just strange man who's a little freaky. He just shows up one day, he calls her "auntie", he tries to take her out and talk to her, remembers when her birthday is even when her own parents don't, and makes a point of phoning her every day.
At first, it was a bit overwhelming for Maya, whose parents have never really paid any attention to her. Being intimidated, as any 7 year old who suddenly has a grown up showering her with attention would, she tries to answer all his questions with monosyllable answers, and shies away when he visits.
After a few years though, she is still answering his qustion with monosyllable answers, but it's not really because she's afraid, but more like she's just grown used to it. She, of course, grows used to Valens.
For Valens though, it's pretty disheartening to have a kid be stone cold to you after buying her gifts on a regular basis for three or four years. Valens himself is a pretty busy man, he's a doctor, after all. He still tries to make time to call Maya though.
One day, while taking the subway home, Maya was talking to Valens on the phone, and the accident occured. Valens was completely panicking, of course, when he heard a loud crash and the phone cut off.

Fortunately for Valens (and Maya), Maya was dug out and brought to a hospital, where she stayed in a coma for a few weeks. She didn't seem to be waking up any time soon, they thought she was dying, so they started to do things like hook her up to iv's and hope that she'll stay alive. And uh, Valens is the doctor in charge of her.
Blah blah blah...

Anyway, Maya does come to, eventually. But she stopped talking, sort of, and only talks to Valens when she talks. Also, she has 12 other personalities inside her. She just woke up and there they were.

Yeah. There's some other stuff, but anything else is really kinda dumb, so I'll just leave it.
